but what I’m wondering about is trolley strategy. when trollies meet up on 4chan, or stormfront or wherever, do they parcel out roles–
you post porn, i’ll post compromising material about the editor, and you’ll play the concern trolley…

I’m pretty sure that’s happened before and will happen again. Though in historical cases “hounding” is often a word that means “executing.”
At least on 4chan, that’s exactly what they do. These are excerpts from the chat logs in which they coordinate the #GamerGate campaign.
And don’t forget that false flag “black feminist” thing on Twitter, whatever that hashtag was. Oh right, #EndFathersDay.
Interesting. Thanks.
Oh Hell, we had some of that showing up here with the Gamergate discussions. The flyby Falcor did here (Intel pulls ads at site critical of #GamerGate) was a sock puppet pretending to be a feminist of colour. We’ve been seeing a lot of false flags and concern trolls here recently.
To (mis)quote Capt Mal Renolds, “They hound pretty hard around here”
You’re afraid to click on my stormfront link, aren’t you?
Yes. I’m usually doing my browsing and such while at work (which is mostly sitting around in case something happens), and while we’re generally pretty easy-going about personal web browsing, I don’t want to have to explain why I’m looking at a Nazi web site. Also, ick.
EDIT: Also, you got me.
Oh, lets not forget the fact that sometimes trolls comment under more than one handle so it appears that there are more people supporting their opinion.
Sometimes a troll will use one account to troll people, another to concern troll and yet another to be the straight man that walks into the trolls trap, effectively starting a fight to draw in “white knights” and “Social justice warriors” who would normally know better than to pick a fight with a troll.
Exactly- And we need not only a social term, but legally defined terms- or to redefine the legal terms so they apply where they need to. Because I think that’s where the real problem is- In figuring out exactly what precedent applies as far as what a person can be charged with.
Remember that threatening, assault, menacing, and intimidation are all very distinctly different things from one another in the eyes of the law.
Anti Social Media has published (with permission) an email from Kathy Sierra to Molly Crabapple, in which Sierra asks Crabapple and other prominent supporters of Auernheimer to clarify that they condemn the injustice of Auernheimer’s prosecution for hacking, while making it clear that Auernheimer has a history of serious destructive behavior against Sierra and others. Crabapple did not directly respond.
Knowing apologists? Surely you mean responsible netizens with randomly intersecting, if particularly specific concerns.
