Opinel No. 8 "picnic" knife, my favorite pocket knife

I’ve carried knives and not carried knives over the years. I don’t think having one is absolutely necessary, but they do come in handy at times. I’d say 80% of the use I get out of having a knife is opening packaging–but then I’m a fairly non-outdoorsy lawyer type. (My knife came in handy last week, for example, to open well-taped bankers’ boxes of documents when we were taking a deposition at another firm’s offices.) And while I don’t use it every day, I get enough use out of it to make it worthwhile to have one in my pocket so long as it doesn’t take up too much space.
