Like @theophrastus I’d guess it’s one of those “annoyatron” devices.
I pranked a co-worker with one of those yeas ago, and he ended up calling the IT department for an emergency, thinking his computer was malfunctioning. For some models you can make it sound like a beep, a cricket, or someone whispering.
