Gambling on finches isn’t even the issue here. I’m surprised by there even being a contest with such a strange choice of metric. I could understand if people were racing finches, or fighting them, or some kind of contest that might be appreciated by spectators. But it boggles my mind that people would stand around a table in breathless anticipation for the number of times a finch peeped.
