Paul Ryan imagines "Cindy," a hypothetical beneficiary of his tax plan, doesn't realize she and her child are starving to death

The Republicans and Democrats are not equally bad. Being killed swiftly and painlessly is not equally as bad as being tortured to death over a very long period of time. Yet you will still die, eventually, either way.

Party operatives like to try to reframe every criticism that includes both parties as a false equivalency. But that’s just corporate tools using an ad hominem attack on a person who has correctly identified any problem that both parties share.

Unfortunately there are many disingenuous arguments that have become mainstream memes. This is only one of them. Here’s another:

Everyone who voted for someone who didn’t win “wasted their vote” according to this snide counterfactual nonsense. But the meme helps prevent third parties from gaining ground in the USA.

In reality, every party’s growth starts with people purposely backing losing candidates. There’s no other way to do it under the current system. If you’re not voting for third parties, you are voting for current trends (increasing income inequality, obdurate structural racism, increasing health costs, &etc.). The major parties have a demonstrated unwillingness to effect meaningful changes to these trends.
