I was in Seattle on vacation back in the mid-oughts and they were all over the place. We tried to get one from as many places as possible.
The only time I ever saw one of those machines was in the amusement park at Coney Island when my grandparents took me there as a 5-year-old. That, and the gigantic nightmarish laughing clown’s mouth entrance to God-knows-what venue, alternately confused and frightened me.
Kewl. What’s a penny, eh?
More importantly, how are we supposed to spend a penny?
Godspeed said at the time (I dunno maybe 25+ years ago?) that they put them on the tracks behind their rehearsal space so I assume they are Canadian. I think the old Queen could handle having her image flattened by a train. I never thought about them symbolically crushing monarchy but it totally makes sense.
So have we!
Love, Europe
Perhaps don’t put them in American machines, but I have seen these occasionally over here- the botanic gardens in my home town has one that crushes the penny you provide, so it must be capable of handling the current coins.
Yeah, 5 euro cent coins are copper coated steel as well, and as mentioned above, there are machines that take them all over Europe
If I’m ever horribly betrayed by a numismatist with an extensive collection of gold coins, I now have an excellent idea how to wreak revenge.
It’s certainly more useful than currency.
Y’all gotta stop the penny thing. It’s a little embarrassing at this point.
