I watched people leave the arm of the paper cutter up all the time. This was a yard-long hunk of ancient steel and the spring holding it up frequently didn’t.

I cut the end of my thumb to the bone lengthwise with one of those devices in college. A 36" blade lets you get a lot of momentum and leverage going!
