I’ve seen this a lot. Not only events where the performers are apparently organisers/ sponsors possessed of dubious talent, but also faking it. Once had a group of 8 or so men who kept turning the mics away from them, and the performance was drowned out by a recording of a real- and much fuller- choir.
Not sure why audiences tolerate it, really.
