I am aware of the meat umbrella technique (I think I first saw it on this Lifehacker post). The meat umbrella is indeed fantastic, but I prefer to savour my wings, and I don’t particularly care if my beer hand gets dirty 
My wings end up about as clean as the meat umbrella technique there, but I take a bit more time to do it (because really, what’s the rush?)
