Private equity looters startled to be called out by name in Taylor Swift award-acceptance speech

“We’re used to ruining the world without anyone taking notice.”

Meh.

Most people who are interested in righting a wrong have experienced the wrong. Some directly, other indirectly via a friend or family member. Sometimes maybe just by seeing it on TV.

Big deal.

She has in fact spotted a real wrong. She wishes to right it. That seems reasonable to me.

It may not even be the biggest wrong in the world (no one is being separated from family and being locked in a cage here), and she may be looking at it more narrowly then she should (i.e. it is bad that it happens to music, but who cares about apps).

So?

I mean if you look at my charitable giving and direct volunteer work I apparently only care about animals (and mostly only dogs and cats). So I clearly have also not chosen the greater injustices in the world to fight (or have I? What is the exchange rate between a cat being needlessly gassed to death vs. a 3 year old forcibly separated from her family and locked in a cage? How many times do each happen in a day? I don’t personally want to do that calculation, I’m fine with just assuming the human misery is more important, but I’ll fix what I want with my own time and money anyway). I give of my money and time for a lot of reasons, but I doubt I ever would have started if I hadn’t had a dog I bonded deeply with.

So is all the time and money I give just so much bullshit because I happened to get too close to the problem one day and had it effect me?

I know you wrote about Swift, and I’m writing about me. But it is the same principal. Does it matter why she realized that the Bad Thing is bad?

No, it doesn’t and your analogy is well put.

There’s just something about this lionizing of a middling talent like TSwift (yeah, come at me, bro!) that just reeks of privilege. I mean, artists of all races, social status and popularity (including the writers of bOing bOing), have been railing against pirate capitalism for generations. I know it’s not a zero sum, but I just can’t find it in myself to have deep feels about her taking a stand; it just feels entirely self serving. And, yeah, a lot of that has to do with her “both sides” silence on her alt right idolization.

ETA: link and Holy Fuck, she generates a whole lot of comments!

Oh, well if you want to join camp “she’s not wrong, but she ain’t special for taking a stand on something that hit her personally”, sure, you can pitch a tent next to mine.

If that isn’t your take on it, I’m fine with pretending we agree

And that should have been my original comment. Thanks for clarifying ;~)

I just discovered that this is not true anymore, a change in law in 2017 removed the required threshold of originality.

I guess now even my code is protected :grinning:

I suspect most of my code should be actively hunted.

But not stunned by the shitty things they are doing to our country and lives across far more than just the rock ‘n’ roll landscape. That’s not a surprise.

Also, “QUICK! GET THEM WHILE THEY ARE STUNNED!”
