I would argue that Romans and other people from the Mediterranean area 2,000 years ago would not have been ‘white’ as we understand it in the 21st century.

That might be neglecting the Middle Ages, when Moorish Muslims dominated the Mediterranean for a couple of centuries. The genetics of Italy (and Greece, Spain, Southern France, and N. Africa changed dramatically.
