I still can’t believe this happened in my lifetime. I live in Colorado, one of the first states to legalize recreational marijuana back in 2012. I voted for it but it was one of those things I never expected to pass. I grew up with anti-drug PSAs and the DARE program, which treated marijuana as being every bit as dangerous as heroin or cocaine, and though I’d gradually been taught otherwise through books and some friends who were users, I’d never risked arrest to try it myself, and hadn’t seen any signs that society at large had rejected the anti-drug propaganda. That seemed to change literally overnight. Suddenly it was no big deal at all, and now we’re at the point where states that haven’t legalized it are (rightfully) seen as somewhat backwards and uptight, lagging behind the trend. I only wish all our other problems could face such an instant and unexpected reversal of attitudes.
