Maybe Dock Ellis was on to something when he decided one fine day, pitching for the Pirates, to intentionally bean the first 4 Cincinnati Reds batters he faced, including Bench and Rose. The umps pulled him during the 4th at-bat (I think!). It did inspire his previously un-inspired teammates, turning around a dismal season.
