The point is different, depending who you are. To big pension plans and the like, the point is to allow professional money management with really low fees. It’s been decades since people realized those professionals generally do a crappy job, but people keep on paying them anyway.
To little guys like me, the point is to let me buy shares of 100 different companies without paying the commission on 100 tiny trades. Either way, the fees are much much lower than doing it the hard way - but index funds are even cheaper and mroe effective.
