Russia's troll factory

When a small elite cadre of them become disillusioned and decide to run their own countertrolling operation using the skils they learned and honed it will make the most unfilmable story ever.

Let John LeCarre have a crack at that screenplay. Of course, the story would end in tears, but weā€™d get a good movie out of it.

@falcor - Since heā€™s asking so nicely, surely tā€™would be rude to turn down his request? Be the sporting type, and give him an extra couple of decades or so.

It could be coming from some drunk kid who doesnā€™t know any better, and needs to be taught a lesson to shut the f**k up and stop annoying people online before he pulls this sort of dumb stunt offline with a car or in a bar with people who are physically larger and angrier than s/he is.

You drunk post, you reap what you sow. Drinking doesnā€™t automagically give you do-overs. It lets more of your real asshole shine through.

I think Nelsonā€™s on the right track:

Bart: (watching Mrs Krabappel in her drunken rampage) Uh oh. Do you think we went too far?
Nelson: Nah. Booze only makes you do things you already wanted to do.
Mrs Krabappel: (rolling on a giant globe) Iā€™m queen of the world!

(Simpsons, Season 21 Episode 2 - Bart Gets a ā€œZā€)

ā€œIā€™m left wondering whether Iā€™ve fallen for the propaganda, or whether Chen himself is pushing propaganda.ā€

They are not exclusive.

Indeed.

Iā€™m inclined to believe that thereā€™s more evidence of the role of fascists than can be explained away as propaganda, but that the various powers involved are all cynically manipulating the situation, through propaganda and other means.

What, exactly is a fascist? Putin has his definition; we have our own.

Fascists who support Russian Nationalism are coddled and funded; those who support Ukrainian Nationalism are encouraged to bring discredit upon the Ukrainian state.

That Chen reports that he himself was set up to look like he was meeting with Russian neo-Nazis kinda makes mean lean towards the ā€œgrossly exaggerated by Russiaā€ side.

Svoboda is a conglomerate of tiny medium-ultra-right wing parties with together less than five percent supporters. They hate Jews, Russians and Germans. And you too, foreigner. They had the support of about ten percent of the population once in 2012, mainly because they dared hating the Russians most openly under the puppet regime. During Maidan they had less than five percent support in Ukraine.
Yes, like most, you fell for it initially.

Sometimes I wonder if Karl Rove hired Putin this time. (kidding)

Putin finds the far right to be useful, insofar as they dislike the EU.

If you look at the comments on any story critical of Putin, Russia invading Ukraine etc, on the websites of the UK papers The Guardian and The Independent youā€™ll see them dominating it. Until this was the story, then they were strangely silent
