When Mansa Musa made his pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324 he took 60,000 people, including 12,000 slaves who each carried 4lb of gold, and 80 camels each weighed down with up to 300lb of gold (number vary on this so how much gold isn’t known exactly.) What is known is that he spent so much and gave so much away that he caused inflation along his route and in the Mediterranean.
