Smart meters can overbill by 582%

Why is it good?

I agree, humans and to some extent their pets are the only animals capable of true stupidity.

Makes sense that you can do it with a controller modification by your HVAC’s technician. But in our area we have an “energy rewards” program where the power company puts a device that receives a “radio signal” (their words) and cycles the compressor to 50%. It seems voluntary, but anecdotally someone I know (who is not computer literate) told me they put the device on their compressor without her permission. I’ll have to ask to see if that was true or not. But I can see the power company making peak summer rates SO high that anyone who can’t afford it has no choice but to join up.

Of course it makes sense to try to reduce electricity any way you can. But until we make turning off the AC in the middle of the day mandatory for everyone, rich or poor, I’d rather use other methods, like good insulation (on the customers’ side) and renewable energy (on the company’s side).

I guess I wouldn’t be so annoyed with this if the power company had been a little more responsible in repairing the multiple outages we had in our area for years. It seems like they just don’t want to waste spend money on infrastructure.

Edit: changed “they put” to “the power company puts”

hmm, I wrote fill immoral instead of feel immoral. Another failing for which I blame the electric company.

Funny how the errors are mostly in favour of the companies. Like in a casino, the house always wins – just not your house.
