I have to disagree. My SO is into SNL and we’ve been together a long time, so I’ve sat through a lot of dreary, unfunny SNL (or tolerated it as background noise). Yes, there has always been tedious filler, but the quality:filler ratio has gone up and down, and right now I would say the show is the strongest it has been in many years.
Weekend Update is holding its own in the age of ubiquitous TV news parodies, the writing is stronger overall, the cast as a whole is quite good with no superstars to hog all the limelight, and they are relying on fewer tired old recurring sketches (thanks in part to the departure of Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig – both very talented, but both overly attached to a small handful of characters).
Here’s something I liked from this Saturday:
