I am just making an educated guess, but I think in addition to being a nice purpose-built instrument, it probably has a built in pickup, I would guess like a piezo contact mic but in theory it could use magnetic-type pickups like a guitar does. Also it has some reverb etc added, which helps a lot.
Kinda makes me want to try making a (not terrible) one
