A view from the Puppenbrücke (bridge of statues) in Luebeck, which I visited on Friday:
The statue is of Mercury with Peace in the background. Lübeck isn’t far from Denmark, and the statue is pointing away from it and the main train station toward the city. Emanuel Geibel wrote a poem about the statue:
Zu Lübeck auf der Brücken
Zu Lübeck auf der Brücken,
Da steht der Gott Merkur,
Er zeigt in allen Stücken
Olympische Figur.
Er wußte nichts von Hemden
In seiner Götterruh’,
Drum kehrt er allen Fremden
Den bloßen Podex zu.
Rough translation:
“On the bridge toward Lübeck’s there stands the God Mercury.
He displays an Olympian figure in every part.
He knew nothing of shirts in his divine peace,
So he turns his ass to every foreigner.”
