I was managing a specialty comic shop back in the early-mid '90’s and remember those times well. Not fondly, but well. All of the bigger companies kept trying to convince the buyers that if you bought this issue #1 (which was only #1 because we reset the numbering, again) with the gold, foil, holographic cover, then you’d never need to work again.
The majority of buyers didn’t care, because they read the comics for the story/art. The speculators dumped them when they didn’t increase 6000000 times in value in the next month. So you could pick them up from the bargain bin 6 months after they came out for pennies in the dollar.
