I was going to comment about how I envy you Americans and your large tracts of land… and then I clicked on the link… Friggin’ BRISTOL!? 
I guess that this trend hasn’t made its way as far as Birmingham yet; though, if HS2 ever actually reaches here, and Brum becomes a dormitory town for London, I expect that micro developments may become a thing. The current trend is turning empty office blocks in to “luxury studio flats”.
