Somewhere on a 3.5" floppy in a box somewhere in my basement is a copy of an example of the then new gif89a format. It shows off various features like text layers. If I remember correctly, it contains a picture of Stephen Wilhite, and he does express his preferred pronunciation. I wasn’t able to find it after several failed searches, and I’m not about to go digging through my basement.
