Sugar taxes reduce soda consumption

Yeah. Here in Pittsburgh when Allegheny County enacted a 10% tax on poured alcoholic beverages (anything served to you in a bar or restaurant) some establishments started itemizing it as the “Onorato Tax” after the County Chief Executive. I’m not sure anyone points it out anymore. The tax was lowered to 7% and the website of the self-styled “Whiskey Rebellion II” opposition is now a domain for sale landing page.

Who makes soda with sugar these days?

And those would be the consumers, who have responded in the way politicians hoped.

The idea that you could reduce business (and that was the goal, if we take the claims that it’s about health on their face, which I don’t) in a sector and expect everything else to stay the same is ludicrous. It’s a dynamic system, and of course employment is a factor in the equation.

Mexican Coke and Pepsi. Most of the smaller domestic manufacturers, they use it as a selling point. When the majors come out with limited edition 1970s throwback cans they use cane sugar.
