That’s a great skit. He was satirising blackface and John Howard Griffin. (It’s in the title of the skit.)
Black Like Me did have some positive effects since:

It confirmed black people weren’t making up the daily prejudice and struggles that were dismissed as mythical by white people. And;

It showed how many white people would only believe in the existence of certain kinds of prejudice against black people if it was witnessed and confirmed by a white man.
Mixed success, overall. It really would have been better if people had just believed the people complaining in the first place.
