The easy way to season cast iron

A couple years ago, for my birthday, I received one of those maille (you know, “chain mail”) scrubbers for cast iron. It’s great for that stuck-on stuff.

I live with people who like to wash them with soap, then leave them in the dish rack to dry rust. Apparently they’d rather face my wrath than wipe the damn thing down with a towel.

Does steel count? That’s one potentially-organic material that utterly dominates its market.

Actually, can anyone think of applications where unalloyed iron is preferred?
