The Pet Rock really was a fad and people did buy them

At the time of the craze, I visited the local university’s open day and found the student geological society was selling pet rocks. But they went one better than the original marketer. They provided a pedigree for your pet rock!

Well - it was labelled “Pedigree”, but was basically a description of how that particular type of rock formed. Quite educational really. Rather than being round, most had once faced sliced and polished, to show off the formation patterns in the rock.

And as well as the cheap stuff, they had also some really pretty (and expensive) pet rocks for sale, where the slicing process had revealed precious minerals or crystals hidden inside the rock.
