To be fair, it is from the memoir written by a white dude who started as a cub reporter for Yomiuri Shinbun, and worked there for some 12 years.
Of course, this doesn’t mean it (the book or show) will be free of white savior tropes, but this doesn’t appear to be a whitewashing of Asian characters, a la too many shows and movies.
