I think that Apple of the 1990s was more forward thinking that in the 00s. There were more advanced hardware and software developments going on. What nearly killed them was the idea that they needed to offer like 20 kinds of different Macs at the same time. This is one thing they got right under Jobs - one deluxe desktop, one budget desktop, one deluxe laptop, one budget laptop.
True. But I have installed OS 9 on a later machine that didnât support it. To do this one needs to add older hardware families in Open Firmware - IIRC MacRISC, MacRISC2, MacRISC3. And then edit the ROM file on the install CD to get rid of the installable machine names. It can be left blank but needs to be padded out so that the checksum verifies. But the Mac in question needs to be extremely similar to a suppoerted OS 9 Mac, otherwise the drivers for its chipset wonât be present.
