This guy wrote a program to call scammers' phone lines 28 times a second

Yes, as I said, true for the US list as well. Just to be clear, I’m OK with cold-calling other people, those who don’t opt out by getting on the DNC list.

The do-not-call list is free.

And only modestly effective. All the scummy ripoff Indian call entres ignore it. Additionally there’s a loophole in it where electioneering calls are explicitly allowed, as are calls from companies that you “have an existing business relationship with”, as are charity calls.

As an aside, I always feel sorry for anyone with an Indian accent whose work involves phoning peole, because we’ve all been trained to be angry at the first few words from an accented stranger on the phone. Must suck to be working for the local council and be phoning about cat registration, only to mistaken for the enemy.

Alfred Milgrom (but not the comic artist - he ran a computer games company) was my first boss. No disrespect to him either.

I got on the DNC list once, those fuckers called me begging for money for years!

Oh, that DNC list, my bad!

Well it stops me cold, and I can only speak for myself. Actually, I never cold-call, although the relationship is sometimes pretty darn cool. Everybody hates cold-calling, and would much rather call on somebody who just requested a quote.

robo dialers can be programmed to press a number.

Nothing fishy about that, nope

such are the joys of GENERALPURPOSE COMPUTING. A simple fix on the scammer’s end is countermanded by a simple fix on the anti-scammer’s program.

Don’t say things like that! If the politicians find out you can use a computer to do anything, you’ll get them advocating banning computers completely.
