Yeah, it’s funny until you realize that there’s a degree of truth to it.
My parents always said “our one gift in life to you is going to be education”, so I attended an academically rigorous private prep school. With kids who had horses, and elevators in their houses, tennis courts next to the basketball court next to the pool… I went to school in a beat up buick roadmaster (remember those awesome things?), while other kids were dropped off in mercedes (and there was that one family with 5 rolls royces…). Can’t complain, I had a dog and a skateboard, so life was good.
But sadly, people do really think that emulating “common” is “quaint” or “charming” etc… I read most of these are things from Tiffany’s that you buy because you can, then you promptly forget, that is unless the interior decorator wants to do something “quaint” with them… Ostentatious displays of wealth and all.
