I wouldn’t dispute that the Mongol expansion fear reinforced the prejudices already in place, which is why I suggested that the journals and reports of Europeans might have been the source for the maps that marked out the limits of Europe. And they certainly were used to write the descriptions of cultures and areas that appeared on maps of the period (many of those including repetition of descriptions from Pliny and Herodotus etc. unchallenged).
