They’re not really buying straws, though. They’re supporting a cause, and receiving a trinket/souvenir in return. Sort of like buying Girl Scout cookies—the cookies themselves aren’t great and they’re not by any stretch of the imagination worth the $4 and $5 a box that people pay, but people pay that much because the money goes to the scouts.
In the case of these straws, the website clearly states that it’s raising money for
Trump Make America Great Again Committee, a joint fundraising committee authorized by and composed of Donald J. Trump for President, Inc. and the Republican National Committee.
I think the straw-buyers know what they’re really getting for their money.
