There’s also the point that, had they been allowed to secede, the Confederates would not have stayed put.
They’d already openly declared their intention to conquer the Caribbean, and they probably wouldn’t have stopped expanding their empire of slavery until they reached the Straits of Magellan.
And then they would have turned back north.
