I thought the conspiracy theorists were all over the symbology, demonic influence, and/or alien technology of the obelisks, oddly placed around the world at the same latitude, etc.

Just finished reading “Saving History: How White Evangelicals Tour the Nation’s Capital and Redeem a Christian America” by Lauren Kerry.
This disappearing monument would fit into one of the narratives she describes where the Washington Monument, which has a religious inscription on its top as well as inscriptions on some of the stones that were donated by congregations, is being removed to erase traces of Christianity. Think of it as an architectural war on Christmas.
