There’s a lot of reasons, but most of them have to do with the polarisation of the community into mutually antagonistic groups. Divide et Impera; and remember Stanley Milgram proved that most people just follow orders from their chosen authorities. If all the Tea Partiers, Occupiers, Paulites, “Patriots”, and racial/ethnic activists that would like to see free and fair elections were capable of working together for just one election cycle, they could smash all the voting machines in the country and we’d have true change very quickly.
