What does “enforcing the laws” look like in this instance, though? It sounds like the cops might actually not be to blame for the situation, as, per one of the linked articles, they’ve already arrested him many times for assault in the past and he’s been cycling through the court system for years. So it’s a bad situation and the options are few, at least until we can transform our prison system from one based on punishment into something new that’s really effective at rehabilitation and mental health treatment. (Probably can’t wait that long with this guy.) I’m guessing that the guy has mental issues so maybe some kind of mental health conservatorship is the best available option to keep people safe, but make no mistake- that’s basically just the modern, polite term for what they used to call locking people up in an insane asylum.
