UK's Great Firewall of Cameron blocks sexual health, rape crisis centre, sex ed sites

Tip for firewall victims:

It only applies to consumer grade broadband.

If you cough for a business package (which, to be fair, you won’t get for less than £20 a month – consumer packages start at a bit less than half that) you’re probably safe. I have a BT Business Broadband (fibre-to-kerb) set-up: no net nanny here. BT’s implementation of the Cameronwall runs on the crappy free router they give domestic subscribers. This suggests that a simple firmware swap – or a third-party ADSL modem – would be enough to fix the censorbot, at least for now.

Because the Tories are addicted to their free market uber alles ideology, they can’t stomach the idea of the government running a censorwall; they had to lean on the ISPs to do so. The ISPs are not idiots, and will do the minimum necessary to mime compliance unless the government holds a gun to their head – which is more likely under Labour, unfortunately. (The Tories rely on big corporate donations to keep their party afloat; I doubt they’ll piss off the ISPs and telcos lightly.)

(How Virgin cable modem customers deal with the fact that Virgin have a total monopoly on cable modems in the UK is another matter. Frankly, I think they’re fucked …)
