Also, assuming that because you have run into one of the extremely common Penicillium molds, it’s going to give you antibiotics…as opposed to say carcinogens…is quite a gamble. The book is I think a little more cautious about these kinds of things.

i kind of hate that view. a lot of my close friends say the same maybe that’s why
we are smashing a huge hole in the middle of biodiversity, and we have only the extinction of the dinosaurs as a comparison
the astroid and resulting climate change that did them in is nothing like what we’re doing - not only with climate, but permanent and persistent chemicals
i don’t think the earth is on the path to becoming mars or something, but we are harming life writ large
we don’t know how common life is. and we don’t really know how resilient it is in response to this kind of stress
the effects of anthropogenic climate change go way beyond us. we’re intelligent enough that we should be care takers of this, our only home. not just for us. but for everything else that lives here with us

We are basically acting like yeast with the Earth as our giant cask of fermenting beer. All yeast do in such a fermentation is turn sugar into booze and CO2 (and more yeast, I guess). Eventually they either: 1) run out of sugar and die or 2) poison their environment with more booze than they can tolerate and die.
We can sort this out if we can collectively manage to be more scientifically literate than a fucking single-celled organism. Considering that we cannot even get behind toothless, feel-good treaties like Paris, I think it is safe to say that things are going to get really bad before we get our shit together.

I do admit to having some Figure 6 in my veins…
The major political party that is willing to run on a truly “disruptive” climate platform doesn’t yet exist, here or in the rest of the first world. Either (1) the problem is a librul hoax or (2) it’s a big problem, which can be solved by making people who Aren’t Us pay to fix it.
