Underneath ancient Mexican temple, archeologists find an even older one

A striking example is the Cathedral of Syracuse in Syracuse, Sicily. Behind a splendid baroque facade is a re-purposed Greek temple, built in in the 5th century BC, which was built in turn on older foundations from pre-Hellenic times. The cathedral builders from the 7th century AD just erected some walls between the columns and made cutouts from the walls of the cella so it would form arches.
