Both Autodesk Inventor and SolidWorks are available for free to high school students as a part of the First Robotics program. Mentoring a robotics team is a small price to pay for access to nice 3D CAD software.

Exactly; hull, minowski, and extrudes are what make OpenSCAD for me on irregular shaped stuff.

It’s a Printrbot Jr. I think I paid $350 for it.

I’ve got a couple of things that I got my stepson to print for me on his Cupcake printer, but for this sort of thing I think I’d just use a sachet or two of Sugru, maybe encasing something rigid for strength.
