Vacant office space in San Francisco doubled to 12 million square feet in 2020

As Socketsite suggests, the total amount is 11.8 million square feet of vacant office space in SF. That’s roughly 8.7 Salesforce towers worth of empty office space.

It looks like most of the change is due to a significant increase in sublease space. So, unless the original leaseholder defaults, the landlord will still get paid even though the space is empty. It’s the leaseholder that is feeling the pain.

Renting someone else’s space in order to rent it to a 3rd party sounds like something the “invisible hand” should have given the finger to.
