The problem isn’t peoples’ faith, or the fact that they have a club, complete with clubhouses, an art museum, and old guys in funny hats, it’s that the old guys in funny hats are still fighting a medieval-era battle about whether they are Above All Secular Law or not…
All they have to do is get over the idea that handing over malefactor priests for punishment by the state won’t actually cause them to lose their ego-battle with the holy roman emperor, or something similarly timely, and they can be on their way.
