Even the grandest Hollywood Stars respect their crew, especially in public. In my experience they tend to be intelligent enough to recognise that without a huge crew they would be a big fat nothing on screen. Of course there are a few rare assholes, who treat everyone, even in public, as their precious ego’s servants. But it’s not really a good look even if you are a superstar. Arseholes exist in all walks of lives, but in my experience there are considerably rarer among successful film people than bankers.
My husband works in the film industry, and if anything, I am continuously surprised how shy and friendly most stars are, admittedly those I have encountered are UK based, but there is a lot of cross over. At the core these are creative people, wanting to make their mark on the world.
The industry and the money men are a different matter, but they don’t tend to sit in the isle seats. It would be a pretty stupid actor who is rude to a costume designer, who is pretty crucial to their image.
In my book this is far more of a sign how deceptive canned images are in capturing the experience of the moment. Would love to hear Jenny Beavan’s version of events–but most likely people were just exhausted after hours of clapping, and were not expecting to be filmed. The bloody thing lasts all night and people were ready for the party or to hide under the duvet–depending on their success.
