I also would assume, or at least hope , that the battery management holds enough power in reserve to do a controlled descent from altitude rather than just letting the battery discharge all the way to the cutoff voltage and dropping like a rock.

I’m sure it works like that out of the box. But judging from how my iPhone behaves now its a few years old, I wouldn’t bank on that spare battery capacity when you really need it.
