A friend published a paper this year on effects of LSD on rat brains. As the video says, the same 5ht receptors are activated by lsd and psilocybin. The data was pretty remarkable, in that the hippocampus networks were highly active and looked like they do in exploratory behavior, but the visual cortex activity looked just like it does in deep sleep. It looked like deeper structures were alert and active, but only loosely connected to external sensory stimuli
