Don’t buy the whole mastadon when a tusk will do. Don’t police mere content, police content that pushes or advocates behaviors that are corrosive to ecosystems.
Just as an example, doxxing is bad. All doxxing. Forever. No matter who it targets. It’s an ecosystem level problem. Advocacy for doxxing should be an instaban on every platform. (To that end: Eliminate real name policies.) Right now we have a weird system where doxxing is okay if it’s certain people who’ve done certain things. But this disregards the fact that doxxing itself is a corrosive behavior, and it’s an all-or-nothing category. You get to choose if you have it on your platform or not, not what kind you get.
Doxxing is just one major example, but there are others. Overall, I’m not sanguine about the major platforms policing the speech they consider acceptable and I worry that the old regime with all its flaws may prove preferable to the brave new world that we’re hobbling together in an ad-hoc reactive fashion.
