Sometimes English uses redundancy for emphasis. Monarchs and viceroys are similar but different – that tells you there is something you should pay attention to. It may not be strictly necessary in a logical sense, but then we’re not speaking Lojban, and personally I find things like that make text more expressive than when everything possible is pared away like an auto grammar editor. 
I personally felt no disrespect. But as someone who has many female friends and colleagues who do work in the industry, I felt that it was my place to suggest replacing the term with the more current one.
