This was an interesting exercise. Watching the Jaws scene two things seem to be happening; one, a condensation/streamlining of the dialogue: was this Shaw’s or Spielberg’s preference, or both? As it’s not being cut in edits, it must have been between those two, yes? Also, that detail about the shark’s eyes (the white protective membrane rolling up) is of course real. So who added that? Was Benchley or Gottlieb there to supply it, or was Spielberg conversant enough to supply it himself? I don’t think it could have come from Shaw? Between these two things it seems that either some rehearsing was being done, or else among the various takes other ideas are being introduced.
