First they came for the looms…
Are these ICE? I’d expect them to be electric and not have a radiator.
A pointed stick through a battery would make for a very, very bad time for all involved.
Oh, that’s a good point! Yeah, don’t poke the battery with a stick. The tires, however, are vulnerable to a tip slash with that spear. I know this because reasons.
Looks just like an automatic centerpunch!
Can’t miss with one of these “Mahlerian” big boys:
Some spray paint on a camera or two would probably be a lot more effective than this, anyways.
Yeah, I kind of wondered the same thing - but he did seem intent on the obvious sensors, even if without much luck, and a smashed windshield would be enough to get it taken out of service (and cosmetic damage might potentially take longer to fix than swapping out a sensor or two anyways).
The attacks on the sensors would likely be the most expensive to fix, and would definitely stop the self-drive capability until it was repaired. And a hammer would seem a tool most suited to the task of damaging the sensors (even though it surprisingly appeared mostly ineffective.) The glass and body panel blows were just an obvious way to add extra damage in a very short amount of time as the vandal walked past them. That’s why it seems to me like the car was a deliberate choice of target.
At least it seems like the attacker thought about it the same way I would have, if I thought it important to vandalize a self-driving car.
Maybe this will spark some kind of movement among San Franciscans who are fed up with Tech Bros and Vulture Capitalists shitting their failed science and economics experiments all over their streets, while the city does nothing. Once it catches on that one person with 60 seconds and a hammer can do $10K of damage and take a Cruise car off the streets for a couple of weeks, it won’t take too many more pissed-off residents to destroy the entire fleet in just a few evenings. (It will be fairly easy to identify them, however.)
And this is why we can’t have nice things.
For decades we have feared the rise of the machines, the day when autonomous robots would begin to attack humans.
I suspect a shattered windshield would affect its viability as a taxi.
I doubt it’d be off the streets for more than a few days. Cruise is owned by GM. Presumably they have mechanics and a lot of spare parts they get at cost.
Just listened to an excellent episode of 99% invisible on the real story of the Luddites
Assuming the vehicle is parked and empty, a firelighter placed under one of the tyres can escalate very quickly.
I dunno, seems like the hammer was still usable after, so no harm done.
Shouldn’t an autonomous car have the ability to call emergency services when it receives a number of impacts?
Also – fast-drying expanding foam
Resistance is futile. The robots will eventually take over the world. It is inevitable.
I had to resort to the pointed stick after I ate the loganberries. I would have used bananas but my nesting partner made banana bread. It’s quite good and lovely to look at.
